Letter from the President and Founder

The "strategic community" devotes a great deal of thought to one of the fundamental questions of humanity: War or Peace? We analyze the global situation, considering the overall picture and the finer details. But: do we prevent war? Do we create peace?

In our mass and media culture, with its undue focus on the "here and now" and its tendency to exaggerate the importance of irrelevant events, we always seem to be trailing behind when it comes to "war".

Not until it is too late, do political institutions take decisive action. Not until a war has broken out, do we ask "Why?" Only when thousands have died, do journalists and politicians devote intensive thought to the question of how such events could have been prevented. So it was in the run-up to the First and the Second World Wars, to the Vietnam War, the Gulf War, to Kosovo and 9/11.

Why?

There is a lack of public awareness about imminently threatening crises and conflicts, a lack of analytical judgment and crisis management, but above all, a lack of targeted action before the situation explodes.

The aim of the World Security Network is to rouse people out of their apathy, to raise awareness of trouble spots before wars break out, to outline proposed solutions and to draw media attention to issues at an early stage.

Above all, however, it aims to network the "strategic community" – politicians, journalists, academics and opinion-leaders around the world – and to convey new creative ideas and policy recommendations to decision-makers at lightening speed via the Internet.

This was my motivation when I founded the Network in Washington D.C., sponsoring this independent non-profit news service, with its motto "Networking a safer world".

I am proud to announce that we now have over 120,000 members of the global info-elite who receive the weekly World Security Network Newsletter.
These include:

  • 45.000 alumnis and professors from elite universities ie Harvard, Yale, Princton, MIT, Duke;
  • 32,000 journalists most of them in the U.S.
  • 30,000 business executives ie members of the worldwide Young Presidents Organization, alumnis from Harvard Business School and INSEAD.
  • 10,000 foreign policy and defense experts
  • 3,000 members and staffers of Parliaments including the European Parliament, the German Bundestag, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives.

70 percent live in the U.S., 20 percent in Europe, 10 percent in Asia, Africa and South America.

Anyone can contribute an article and take part in the global discussion, be it the former Chairman of NATO's Military Committee, General Klaus Naumann – a member of our Advisory Board – or a bright student with a smart idea.

Just register and join growing network of concerned and thinking global citizens!
